Reveal vs AutoEntry: data entry or evidence retrieval?
AutoEntry reads documents photographed, uploaded or emailed to it. Reveal retrieves evidence from the client's inbox and supplier portals. How they differ.
Reads and codes the documents that are sent to it.
- The client photographs, uploads or emails each document
- AutoEntry reads it and applies codes
- It is published to the accounting software
Goes and gets the evidence for each transaction.
- A transaction is missing its invoice or receipt
- Reveal retrieves it from the client's approved sources
- It links it to the payment and suggests a treatment
- Your team reviews it, and it goes to the ledger
AutoEntry and Reveal solve different halves of the same problem. AutoEntry, from Sage, automates data entry: documents are photographed in its app, uploaded from the desktop or emailed to an AutoEntry address, and it reads, categorises and publishes them to the accounting software. Reveal automates retrieval: once the client approves access, it goes to their inbox and supplier portals, finds the evidence for each transaction and links it to the payment.
If the documents are reaching you and typing them in is the bottleneck, AutoEntry fits. If the documents aren’t reaching you at all, that’s what Reveal is for.

How AutoEntry works
AutoEntry’s model is capture, categorise, publish. Paper is photographed in the mobile app or uploaded; PDFs are emailed to a dedicated address. AutoEntry reads each one, applies VAT codes and categories from the accounting software and publishes it. It also reads bank and supplier statements, which is useful when a client’s bank feed has gaps.
Pricing is per client in credits, so cost follows document volume.
How Reveal works
The client clicks a link and connects their email. There’s no app to download and no account to create. Reveal reads the mailbox read-only, to recognise receipts and invoices: it can’t send, change or delete anything, and the practice sees only the financial documents it retrieves, never the inbox. Supplier portals are connected once, and some ask the client to complete a security step.
For each transaction, Reveal finds the evidence, links it to the payment and shows why it matched and where it came from. It extracts the details and suggests a treatment, but it doesn’t decide. Your team reviews it before it goes to the ledger. When nothing is found, the transaction is marked not found rather than filled with a guess.
The real difference: who does the work
AutoEntry removes the typing, but someone still has to get each document to it. When clients are organised, that’s fine. When they aren’t, the practice is back to chasing.
Reveal removes the sending. Most of what clients don’t send is digital and already sitting in their inbox or a supplier portal, so Reveal goes and gets it.
Can you use both?
Yes. AutoEntry can handle the paper and the statements; Reveal retrieves the digital evidence the client never sent. Decide which tool owns which suppliers so nothing is posted twice.
Which should you choose?
- AutoEntry, if documents reach you but entering them takes the time, or you need statements read.
- Reveal, if your bottleneck is missing evidence from clients who don’t send things.
